Washington's Oldest Incorporated Town - 1854


Founded by Lafayette Balch, a Maine sea captain, Steilacoom began as a bustling frontier seaport on Puget Sound. It was the seat of Pierce County and a leading candidate for the site of the territorial capitol. This past has been preserved in the village of today.

Established as a National Historic District in 1974, Steilacoom has 32 buildings and sites listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.



Steilacoom Features
  • Nathaniel Orr Home & Pioneer Orchard
    Built in 1854-1857, contains original furnishings and artifacts. OPEN Friday to Sunday, 1 - 4 p.m.


  • Bair Drug & Hardware Store - 1895
    Includes early-day post office, hardware, patent medicines, 1906 soda fountain. Lunches, ice cream, breakfast on weekends. Open year round: 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. daily. 253 588-9668.


  • Museum - Town Hall
    Focuses upon pioneer period 1860 - 1900. Original volumes of Washington Territory's first Library Association. Open Wednesday - Sunday, 1 - 4 p.m., March - October. Open Friday - Sunday, 1 - 4 p.m., November, December, February. Closed in January. Closed on legal holidays.
